How to Become a Top Industry Expert

I've had a lot of people contact me in the last six months asking if they could "pick my brain" about the best way to become an industry expert to advance their careers. Writing for Linkedin has been instrumental in that. I truly enjoy contributing here. I just wish I had more time to take all those calls and coffee meetings because I really love chatting with people about this. As a career coach, I am a huge fan of personal branding and the need to develop your business-of-one's "expert status" as a way to stay employable for a lifetime.

Looking back, there are five not-so-secret weapons I used to help me build my industry expert status. They were:

  1. Blogging - guest posting and hosting my own blog.
  2. Coaching - teaching others to prove my expertise.
  3. Strategic Partnerships - building meaningful connections with industry peers.
  4. Video - creating educational sound bytes for the web.
  5. Resources - offering free tools based on my methodologies.

The above helped me refine my message, increase my knowledge, and expand my circle of influence.

However, to REALLY succeed, you'll need this:

All of the above helped me get where I am, but there is one thing I absolutely needed to earn industry expert status:

The conscious decision (and the willpower!) to not let other people's negative perceptions of my desire to have a greater impact on the world get in the way of my work.

Wanting to be an industry expert is easy...getting there isn't.

The good news is, it's not rocket science. I truly believe anyone who wants to become an industry expert do so. Every industry benefits from multiple experts - why shouldn't it be you?

That being said, if you can't stand up to others and be confident in your pursuit of industry expert status, it won't matter how much time and energy you put into it - you'll never make it.

Do you have the career confidence to realize your potential as an expert?

Only you can decide that. But, I always think it's a shame when I meet someone with valuable aspirations who is being held back because they care too much about what other people think.

Here's what I tell every person I work with. When it comes to your career, there's only one person you need to impress: yourself.

Top industry experts already know that.

The best industry experts I know gave up worrying about what people thought of their goals a long time ago. Instead, they got busy doing what they knew would make them feel happy and satisfied professionally: they pursued their passion to change the world on their own terms.

Now, I realize there are lots of other things you need to succeed as an industry expert. (I'll be discussing them in the webinar I mentioned above.)
